Warehouse Management Software Redesign

Warehouse Management Software Redesign

Client

The US-based client specializes in warehouse operations software. Their native application enables users to create and manage warehouse-specific processes, including a powerful label designer tool. The platform serves product owners and developers who build custom software for warehouse managers and operational staff, providing tools tailored to complex inventory and logistics workflows.

Challenge

Years of accumulated legacy UI decisions had left the software visually dated and difficult to navigate, particularly given the breadth of its tools. Users encountered consistent friction when navigating settings and workflows, leading to operational inefficiencies. The interface's rigidity made it increasingly difficult to meet the expectations of users accustomed to contemporary software experiences.

Solution Highlights

DataArt's redesign initiative focused on revitalizing the software's user interface and enhancing the overall usability and efficiency of complex warehouse operations. Key highlights of our process include:
  • Conducting a comprehensive audit and functional breakdown of existing tools and settings.
  • Implementing a ribbon-based navigation system using DevExpress UI components.
  • Completely redesigning the layout by introducing a layers panel and a properties panel for contextual settings.
  • Developing a custom, scalable iconography set aligned with the software's needs.
  • Redesigning the standalone label designer tool to make label creation more intuitive and efficient for end users.

Tool and Settings Review

We conducted a detailed breakdown of the software's complex tools and settings, analyzing user workflows to identify patterns and clusters of related features. This helped eliminate redundancies and informed a reorganized experience that prioritizes clarity and task efficiency.

Breakdown And Comparison

New Layout Structure

Adopting the DevExpress Ribbon component as the centerpiece, the new layout offers a highly intuitive navigation experience. Adding a layers panel on the left provides users with an organized, hierarchical view of processes. In contrast, the properties panel on the right ensures dynamic access to relevant settings, greatly improving workflow fluidity.

Custom Iconography

We analyzed the existing icons and identified inconsistencies and scalability issues. Based on these findings, we created a scalable icon system that incorporates the client's brand colors and maintains visual consistency. The set currently features over 300 icons and continues to grow to meet the evolving needs of the software, ensuring clarity and recognizability across all screen sizes and contexts.

Standalone Label Designer Tool

The label designer tool, developed for creating custom, scalable label templates, was independently revamped with a minimalist UI that leverages the ribbon panel for all navigation. The simplified interface accelerates label creation and management while maintaining all specialized features, ensuring faster work times and fewer errors.

Conclusion

This comprehensive redesign transformed the warehouse management software into a structured, maintainable product that supports complex operational demands without compromising usability. The rebuilt interface structure, combined with thoughtfully crafted visuals, ensures users can navigate and perform their tasks efficiently, thereby facilitating greater productivity and satisfaction.

Outcomes

  • A consistent, well-structured UI that respects the client's existing technology choices.
  • Improved user productivity and reduced cognitive load through better navigation and workflows.
  • Scalable UI components and iconography designed for future development and expansion.
  • A flexible platform poised to integrate emerging warehouse technologies moving forward.
