Our client is an organization dedicated to improving the management of study sessions at numerous reading centers with over 6,000 elementary students. They use an online platform that enables educators to conduct sessions aimed at enhancing students' reading skills.

Business Challenge

Our team was engaged just two months prior to the platform’s scheduled launch to improve its performance and stabilize essential workflows, as the previous vendor did not meet expectations. DataArt had one month for knowledge transfer and another month before the production launch and user adoption. At the onset of the transition period, key features like book and slide sharing were malfunctioning, live sessions faced video and audio loading issues, and some users were unable to access the sessions altogether.

Solution

Our team prioritized stabilizing session functionality and maintaining a reliable production environment during the initial weeks of the project to ensure a smooth product launch. This involved addressing key platform features such as video performance, wide-format books, Student Read-Aloud (SRA), Teacher Read-Aloud (TRA), and other critical fixes.

Key improvements included:

  • Video Stabilization: Resolved issues that prevented students and tutors from seeing each other's video tiles, ensuring seamless interaction during sessions.
  • Student Read Aloud (SRA) Functionality: Enhanced the visibility and accessibility of SRA books, allowing smooth transitions between reading modes, thereby supporting better engagement.
  • Wide-format Books Stabilization: Improved rendering of wide-format book content to fit designated areas, alongside establishing separate styles for better clarity.
  • Tutor Read Aloud (TRA) Enhancements: Enabled tutors to navigate books effortlessly during sessions, improving the overall tutoring experience.
  • User Session Management: Implemented automatic logout after one hour of inactivity to enhance security and protect user data.

Our team also addressed critical backend issues that hindered platform performance, including:

  • Improvements for homepage display issues and session loading constraints
  • Optimizations to enhance data retrieval and integrity
  • Later in the project, DataArt expanded accessibility and functionality by introducing several new features, such as a magnification tool, wide book compatibility, iPad support, and interactive capabilities. These enhancements boosted student engagement, leading to improved tutor retention and greater student satisfaction.

Results

DataArt increased the platform's performance, focusing on three main features: session management, online tutoring, and lesson and book management resulting in:

  • Improved usability by designing and rebuilding significant areas of the platform
  • Reduced overall page load and wait times by 17%
  • Improved tutor focused pages responsiveness by 26%
  • Increased session performance by cutting wait times by 47%
  • Closed out roughly 500 bugs inherited from the previous vendor, including issues with sharing course materials, video/audio playback, and session connections
  • Enhanced video stability, enabling use of wide-format books and seamless integration with learning resources during live learning sessions
