The client is a social networking platform that connects people based on shared interests. The company remains true to its mission of helping people grow and achieve their personal or professional goals through authentic human connections.

Challenge

The client used several payment providers and manual subscription billing processes to organize their paid memberships on the platform. As the business started growing, the need for a dedicated, more flexible subscription management system arose. The goal was to implement subscription automation processes, allowing for recurring payments with tiered subscription plans, trial periods, and variable usage charges, while having access to automated reporting to trace business performance.

There was also the need for a trusted subscription data source, as the client stored all subscription data in its database. This information was not always reliable due to data synchronization issues, affecting the quality of reports and requiring additional efforts from the engineering team to restore data consistency.

The client's vision included launching a new subscription tier for mobile and website users that would allow exclusive access to new platform features, custom profile badges, and no ads.

To rebuild its subscription and payment processes, the client partnered with DataArt, trusting our expertise and experience in building solutions for the media & entertainment industry. To accomplish this, DataArt facilitated the implementation of the Stripe payments platform, proposing additional product features to the project including different payment methods, platform and subscription management tools, and data storage strategies for automated reporting.

Solution

The DataArt team consolidated payment providers, making Stripe becoming the main website payment processor. For the subscription management systems, DataArt automated the platform’s billing processes by integrating Stripe Billing and implemented UI components to build a web checkout flow optimized for conversion.

DataArt additionally migrated membership dues to Stripe by integrating Stripe Billing and Stripe Connect. Stripe Billing enabled the setting up of recurring membership dues payments from members to organizers, while the client was set up as a Connect platform, connecting merchants (group organizers) to their customers (group members), and charging a platform fee from the transactions made.

For the new subscription tier, DataArt built a new system from scratch, simplifying processes and reducing database storage by relying on Stripe’s API for subscription data. DataArt additionally integrated Stripe Data Pipeline, a recent product launch, providing access to account data and improving subscription reports. The team supervised connecting the Stripe Data Pipeline to the client’s data warehouse running on AWS Redshift.
