Large-Scale AWS Migration Acceleration Program

DataArt implemented a comprehensive cloud migration effort including multiple AWS Migration Acceleration Programs.

Client

The client is one of the biggest sports betting and gaming providers.

Challenge

The client chose DataArt as a reliable technology partner accredited by AWS to implement a comprehensive cloud migration effort consisting of multiple Migration Acceleration Programs (MAP). DataArt delivered the MAP programs for two biggest and earliest of the on-premises data centers.

Meeting the Challenge

Phases of the Migration Acceleration Program

  1. Assessing migration readiness: DataArt performed Well-Architected Review (WAR) and prepared Migration Readiness Assessment (MRA) to spot the risk zones, consider all the processes on the client's end and make sure all essential aspects are considered before the migration is initiated
  2. Mobilizing client's workloads: Building an operational foundation for migration (cloud environment, load balancers, landing zones and other instances), bridging the capability gaps identified in the assessment phase
  3. Migrating the client's workloads: Designing, migrating, and validating workloads in AWS and decommissioning of data centers

Migration of the Data Center 1: QA

The process of migration involved several essential activities, such as:

  • Implementation of multiple testing environments: sandbox, dev, staging
  • Improving security posture of the cloud by enforcing SCP policies
  • Establishing network connectivity between AWS and data centers

Besides, DataArt organized the migration of the new CI/CD platform buildout from legacy systems to AWS and implemented automation of the provisioning of infrastructure with IaC using Terraform. This move enabled the client to develop, deploy, and scale cloud applications in a declarative manner. On top of that, the DataArt team developed strategies, standards, and sets of rules for the stack to migrate seamlessly and reduce the impact on services.

Migration of the Data Center 2: Production

For smooth and successful migration of this data center, the DataArt team performed three waves of migration based on the complexity of workloads. As a part of the process, DataArt implemented production environments and workloads as well as Tagging Strategy to categorize and organize resources in a meaningful way.

Other essential ongoing activities included:

  • Incidents investigation and troubleshooting during operations
  • Supervision of Go-live events during the traffic switch over to AWS
  • Guiding the client on usage of the AWS cloud & business process
  • Governance via AWS Organizations to provide common frameworks for everyone involved

Key figures and results

  • The entire journey to the cloud featured the migration of ~500TB of data
  • 2600+ repositories and pipelines consolidated and migrated to Github Enterprise Cloud with runners hosted in AWS and integrated with SAST and SCA
  • 300+ AWS accounts vended via Account Factory
  • Launching a Global Network using CloudWAN & Shield Advanced with about 5k firewall rules that allow environment segregation, including thousands of DNS records
