Skylark utilizes top-tier, privately negotiated agreements with all major airlines, enabling travelers to save up to 60% on Business class bookings. Moreover, Skylark provides a dedicated team of in-house advisors with unparalleled expertise, always available to assist with any unexpected situations.

Challenge: Minimizing Service Disruptions to Provide Exceptional Customer Experience

Skylark faced several technical challenges:
  1. Maintenance issues necessitating periodic restarts of inventory services. Given the criticality of timely pricing and availability updates for travel booking platforms, Skylark wanted to minimize service disruptions.
  2. Skylark aimed to streamline manual interactions by implementing automated procedures.

Skylark's platform was built around AWS as its core. Therefore, the company sought assistance from an experienced technology partner with deep domain and relevant cloud expertise to get reviews and recommendations and quickly analyze and modernize its platform for enhanced operational excellence, reliability.

Solution: Addressing Infrastructure Issues and Enhancing Operational Efficiency

Being an Amazon Web Services Travel and Hospitality Competency Partner and a member of AWS Well-Architected Partner Program DataArt proposed a Well-Architected Review to assess Skylark's AWS Cloud architecture and identify critical issues and areas for improvement.

Collaborating closely, Skylark and DataArt reviewed the list of recommendations and agreed on a short time-boxed initiative to mitigate the most critical items focused on operational excellence, security, performance efficiency, and cost-optimization.

Highlights:

The DataArt team optimized the production environment by:

  • Adding comprehensive monitoring and logging, using Datadog, RDS slow logs, Cloudfront, WAF logs, etc.
  • Decommissioning unused assets and implementing automatic clean-up and lifecycle rules.
  • Adjusting EKS cluster - migrating self-managed node group to more performant resources, optimized memory limits, etc.
  • Identifying and fixing resource conflicts, eliminating the need for manual service restarts.

Additionally, based on WAR recommendations, DataArt helped to enhance protection through account governance and security rules configuration.

Outcomes:

Skylark successfully leveraged DataArt's expertise to optimize its platform. Within a limited timeframe, the team improved traceability, addressed the root causes of issues, and optimized resource utilization. In addition to cloud improvements, DataArt has also assessed the platform's architecture for future expansion of capabilities and integrations.
