DataArt Announces ORANGE – the Missing Piece in Nutrition Tracking

New R&D initiative provides food recognition technology to calculate calorie intake

DataArt today announced the first results of DataArt ORANGE, a series of research and development projects that aim to automate the tracking of users’ nutrition habits. The DataArt ORANGE program automatically tracks calorie information by scanning photographs of food. DataArt ORANGE technology can currently recognize over 100 foods with an 85% success rate.

DataArt ORANGE utilizes various technologies, from visual food recognition and geo-positioning to semantic web, to log information from users, such as the times of the day that food is consumed, geographic location and number of calories in food, a process previously possible only with manual entries into an application. This program combines information from various technologies with advanced computer vision and image processing algorithms to seamlessly and holistically track nutrition.

“The future of healthcare is not in the technology that allows doctors and surgeons to work more efficiently, but rather in the technologies that allow to constantly monitor our vital signs, detect trends and deviations, match collected data with historical records of millions of other people to warn us about potential problems before they present a serious threat,” said Eugene Goland, President of DataArt and mastermind of Orange.

“In today’s society, a healthy lifestyle is increasingly important, and nutrition is vital to achieving it,” added Goland. “People currently exert significant time and effort to assemble all their nutritional and health information, and DataArt ORANGE will automate the process, leaving them more time to focus their energy on making healthier choices.”

DataArt ORANGE is currently a prototype, which, when complete, will be offered for integration with existing nutrition tracking solutions, eliminating manual input of data.
