Privacy in Connected Cars

In an interview with IT Zoom, Igor Ilunin, Head of IoT at DataArt, suggests the best preventive measures against unauthorized access to the user and vehicle data.

“IT-Zoom: To what extent is data and privacy protected in networked driving? What legal requirements are there?

Igor Ilunin: Car manufacturers, suppliers, and third-party car connectivity providers are the most important guarantors of privacy and data protection. It is in their interest to develop highly secure and reliable solutions to keep the user and vehicle data in a safe place. All companies that store personal data of EU citizens must comply with the GDPR regulations.”

“IT-Zoom: Which methods and technologies can be used to prevent unauthorized access to vehicle and usage data?

Igor Ilunin: Several approaches exist here: the modern security and authentication approach on the communication channel between vehicle and provider, secure and encrypted data storage on the provider side as well as authorizations or role-based access to the data. To detect anomalies in behavior or data usage that indicate unauthorized access, I recommend the use of data records and data verification protocols.”
