DataArt's Eugene Dmitriev at the Grunwald battle in Poland
September 14, 2005
DataArt Unix developer Eugene Dmitriev has recently participated the Re-enactment of the Grunwald battle, near the Malborg castle in Poland. The Grunwald Festival occurs annually on the site of the historic battle and draws large crowds of spectators. The program includes a colorful theatrical performance, with knights in full costume fighting in combat and a minstrels’ contest.
"It was a great festival, and a challenging one: all the costumes and armor had to be made identical to the original ones," says Dmitriev. "It was also my first trip to Europe, and the visit to the Malborg castle - the residence of Tevton knight order till 1429 – was unforgettable."
Malborg castle was a capital of the Tevton order in Prussia, during XIV and XV centuries. It's a fine example of the historical developments in art of fortification of five centuries. The site belongs to the UNESCO world heritage list.
Participants of there-enactment events are enthusiasts of re-staging historical shows. The challenge is to be impeccably precise, thus preparations take months of hard work and years of experience to reconstruct the scenery. Profound knowledge of history is essential. Says Dmitriev: "It goes without saying that we know every tiny piece of equipment, and the order of actual historical events. I've been participating in the festival for more than 10 years."
