DataArt Java Experts Attend Sun Microsystems Conference
September 08, 2005
DataArt developers attended a conference organized by Sun Microsystems. Java expert Yuri Kabrits participated in a closed round-table discussion with James Gosling, Java inventor, organized for the leading St. Petersburg Java specialists. This is the first time Gosling attended a St. Petersburg-based event.
The discussion concerned the future of Java technology and was based on questions of most interest to Russian developers. Gosling described the current situation with Java support for Mac OS X and Free BSD operating systems, and discussed the problem of deprecated classes. The open source community successfully solved this problem by doing away with classes altogether, but the problem still remains unresolved as Sun's policy does not allow for leaving them out, as it will mean that old applications won't be supported unless specially tuned. Gosling also spoke about Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ) – a Java technology used for precise controlling of physical systems. It has already demonstrated its usefulness during a recent mission to the Mars.
Participants familiarized themselves with the latest achievements in Java application development tools, including Java Studio Creator, NetBeans and Java Studio Enterprise. The leading Sun Microsystems specialists presented the new features of JDK 6.0, spoke about prospects of virtual machines technology, and reviewed methods of developing effective MIDlet applications.
